![]() ![]() I won’t mention spoilers, but even though the game opens up a bit in the latter portions, I was still left wanting more. Unfortunately, gameplay-wise I would’ve liked a bit more in this department. ![]() ![]() Sure, the tasks you complete are monotonous and technically chores, but you’re rewarded with more story as you go along. The gameplay represents a means to an end. As changes manifest throughout the world it becomes increasingly clear that not all is as it seems, which is what makes No One Lives Under the Lighthouse so compelling. Constantly looming overhead with a creepy aura about it. It gets to a certain point that the lighthouse itself feels like a central character. You are there to tend to the lighthouse so you’ll need to find the tools to keep it up and take care of it. Most of the gameplay revolves around light puzzle solving and exploration on the island. It’s a simple game even non-gamers will be able to jump in and enjoy the experience. Slowly as you play out your nightly ritual of tending to the lighthouse, the story begins to unravel itself in surprising ways. Players will take on the role of a lighthouse keeper who’s called in after the disappearance of the previous keeper. ![]() The game has a very intentional graphical style, evocative of the early days of the PlayStation. So what exactly is No One Lives Under the Lighthouse ? The game is a slow burn horror title that borrows inspirations from the puzzle solving days of survival horror games. On the surface level, it’s a PS1-style retro throwback in the vein of other recent indie titles but deep inside it provides a haunting experience that is ingrained into my brain days later. That’s what intrigues me most about No One Lives Under the Lighthouse. Horror is usually the genre where developers have the most freedom to go buckwild with ideas even if they don’t always pan out as well as you hope. As you encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. Explore the various planets and locations of Halcyon, including the mysterious Gorgon Asteroid and delightful distilleries of Eridanos. You awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the colony. If you missed out on The Outer Worlds the first time ( and missed our review), the story sees you lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the edge of the galaxy. Those players who already have The Outer Worlds and the appropriate DLC, “Murder on Eridanos” and “Peril on Gorgon,” for Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or PC, can upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition within that same console family or that same PC store at a reduced price. The game will also sport a higher level cap. The Spacer’s Choice Edition includes the base game, which has been “remastered with better graphics, improved performance, additional animations, higher-res environments, and more”, alongside all of the previously-released add-on content. Touted as “the definitive way to play” The Outer Worlds, this upgrade of the 2019 original will arrive March 7 for PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG, along with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Obsidian Entertainment is jumping on the current-gen upgrade bandwagon with The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition. ![]()
